I can't skateboard. I've tried, but the slippery red wheels did not cooperate. Instead, I live vicariously through videos of legend Mark Gonzales and relative newcomer Zered Bassett. Both seem to have an almost magnetic connection to their boards and a similar fluidity in their tricks as they cruise city streets.
Speed is what often drives people to wheel-based sports. The more skill they acquire, the easier it is for them to increase their velocity. But there is a shortcut: electric-powered wheels. Even the simplest pair of inline skates can now betweaked with an electric motor to go top speed.
Electric skateboards are now joining electric bikes as alternative modes of transport. Now that it's warmer, it's time to test out some wheels and go for a ride, so we've put together a list of electrifying choices. It's almost certain you'll have a good time with any of them, but safety is not guaranteed.
